Clerking Patients

Clerking Patients

The one thing that has been hammered into our heads since clinicals, is good and proper history of the patient. In other words, taking history is very important.
There are different types of patients. We have the co-operative patients who endure the million and one uncomfortable questions and answer each of them with a smile, these ones makes studying Medicine worthwhile. There are the annoying ones who claim that they came to the hospital to see the Doctor and not answer questions from medical students. There are the frustrating patients, these ones just ignore every sound that come out of your mouth, and finally the lying patients, they tell you everything you need to know about the history but the problem is they say something else when you present their case to the Consultant.
With my little experience I have found out that the worst patients are the psychiatric patients especially the depressed ones, Manic patients are the best, but you should know how to put your words right and control the conversation, if not it will be one hell of a ride.
Yesterday, a friend and I went to clerk a female psychiatric patient, turns out she was extremely depressed, her words were incoherent and self persecuting. We struggled to get some notes down and promised to come in today to finish it up, and guess what... She is not responding.
... Now am frustrated..
